Eric Abidal urges Club to offer Dani a new Offer

Former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has urged the club to offer a new contract to defender Dani Alves, who he says is the best right back in the world even now.

The Brazilian was brought to the club in 2008 for around £ 25 million, which then made him one of the world’s most expensive defenders. He has proved the Catalan club that they were correct in making the decision to spend such a vast amount of money.

His presence was a major factor in the club lifting numerous league titles and Champions League trophies under the reign of Pep Guardiola.

It was also the presence of Alves that allowed Guardiola to take advantage of Lionel Messi’s incredible talent. The statistics of the 31-year-old have dipped of late. Barcelona are aware of this dip in form and are not really interested in extending the contract of the Brazilian. Alves has said on a number of occasions that he wants to stay at the Camp Nou, but he has also confirmed that there has been no offer on the table as of yet. Abidal, who left the club in a similar situation, says that Alves continues to remain as the world’s best right back and Barcelona should keep him.

“They have to renew it. He is the best right-back in the world. If I was president I would have called him to renew.Barca cannot sign [anyone] and they have to keep their best players.Age has no importance, look at Pirlo, and they are still renewing [his contract],” said Abidal. The 31-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season. He has featured in 22 matches in all competitions and has contributed an incredible four assists, which is remarkable for a defender but his performances in previous years have been even better.
